The life that was
shared by the Brontes at Haworth can be, and
has been, described as 'gothic'. The sisters
were raised as 'proper young women', Emily,
Anne and Charlotte completed their education
and then hired out as governess' and thought
that they might become teachers, perhaps even
opening a school. Academia was not to be the
sisters destiny, however, as the advertisement
for the new school went totally unanswered and
their dream of a school was dismissed (Cody
brontbio.html). In their search for productive
activity, they stumbled upon the writings they
had done as children and the poetry done as
adults.
Their first publication was a
book of poetry by the three and published
under the pseudonyms of Currer, Ellis and
Acton Bell in 1846 and was followed the next
year by the three separate novels: Charlotte's
Jane Eyre, Emily's Wuthering Heights,
and Ann's Agnes Grey. The sisters went
their separate ways for a bit after the
publication of their separate novels. However,
they seemed to be drawn to the house in
Haworth, for good or for bad.
